Cell Block Theatre, National Art School: The atmospheric Cell Block Theatre at the National Art School is hidden behind the convict-hewn sandstone walls surrounding the Art School.
In constructing the Cell Block the internal walls and floors of the original Darlinghurst Women’s Gaol were removed to reveal ten-metre high sandstone walls leaving behind an open cathedral-like space. The impression of the old cells still lingers with traces of the curved stone staircases climbing 3 stories high, the narrow barred windows, the rough sandstone edges that mark the cells and the solid iron doorway.
The adjacent courtyard allows your guests to gather for pre-drinks under the overhanging greenery and the National Art School also offers a Gallery Lawn space within the precinct which is ideal for outside wedding ceremonies. Venue hire includes some on-site parking and AV.
